Japanese Accent: Penult Standard

Lesson 1: Kun Nouns

Lesson 1 Introduction

"Penult" means the second to last within a series. Regarding language, it is the second to last syllable of a word. In Japanese, the accent is located on the penult of the word. This lesson explains how the accented penult applies to "kun reading" nouns. For details, view explanations under the video.

「ペヌルト」とは、シリーズの中で最後から2番目という意味です。言語に関して言えば、それは単語の最後から2番目の音節のことです。日本語では、アクセントは単語の最後から2番目の音節に置かれます。このレッスンでは、「訓読み」名詞に「ペヌルト」のアクセントがどのように適用されるかを説明します。詳細は、動画の下にある説明をご覧ください。

Lesson 1 Concept 1: Penult

"Penult" means the second to last syllable of a word. In many Japanese words, the accent is on the penult.

「ペヌルト」とは、単語の最後から2番目の音節を意味します。多くの日本語の言葉では、アクセントは最後から2番目の音節に置かれます。

"Ultima" means the last syllable of the word. A corollary of the penult having the accent is that the ultima is unaccented. The sound level of the word drops from the second to last syllable (penult) to the last syllable (ultima).

「ウルチマ」とは、単語の最後の音節を意味します。アクセントが最後から2番目の音節にあるという必然的な帰結として、最後の音節にはアクセントがないです。単語の音量は、最後から2番目の音節(ペヌルト)から最後の音節(ウルチマ)にかけて低下します。

Accent color: Dark red = accent.

All "Example Word" sections in this series give the reading in hiragana in the upper half of the section. This allows the learner to clearly see the accent pattern by the size and color of the hiragana characters. If the learner is not familiar with hiragana, Kanji Learning Today: Online Hiragana is a free system for learning hiragana offered by Blue Sea Press.

このシリーズの「単語例」セクションでは、セクションの上半分にひらがなでの読み方が記載されています。これにより、学習者はひらがな文字の大きさや色によってアクセントのパターンを明確に把握できます。学習者がひらがなに慣れていない場合は、Blue Sea Pressが提供する「Kanji Learning Today: Online Hiragana」が無料のひらがな学習システムです。

Lesson 1 Concept 2: "On" and "Kun" Words

In Japanese there are 2 types of words: "on" and "kun." This is an attribution that indicates from where word emerged into the language. An on word is one with pronunciation that derived from Chinese origins. A kun word is one with pronunciation from a native Japanese word that existed before Chinese influences.

日本語には「音読み」と「訓読み」という2種類の語があります。これで、ある言葉がどこから言語に取り入れられたかを示すものです。音読みの言葉は、中国語に由来する発音を持つ単語のことであります。訓読みの言葉は、中国語の影響を受ける以前から存在していた日本語の単語で、その由来の発音を持つ単語のことです。

There are some special cases of mixing the on and kun types (discussed in Lesson 10), but most words are either one or the other.

音読みと訓読みが混在する特殊なケースもいくつかありますが(レッスン10で説明します)、ほとんどの単語はどちらか一方です。

bird
(kun reading word)

やちょう wild bird
(on reading word)
ちょう

Note: Accent not shown for 野鳥 because "On Nouns" are covered in Lesson 4.

This lesson (Lesson 1) covers kun nouns.

このレッスン(レッスン1)では、訓読みの名詞についてアクセントを説明します。

Lesson 1 Point 1: 1-Syllable Kun Nouns

There is only one syllable in the word, so it is accented.

その単語は音節が1つしかないので、アクセントが置かれます。

This may seem like a contradiction of the concept above, that the accent is usually on the penult (second to last syllable). But there is no "penult relative to ultima" relationship because that requires two syllables. In essence, the single syllable kun noun is acting as the penult and there is no ultima.

これは、上記の概念と矛盾するように思えるかもしれないが(アクセントは通常最後から2番目の音節にあるという)、この1つの音節がある状態だけ当たります。その理由が、「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目)と「ウルチマ」(最後)の関係は存在しない。なぜなら、そういう関係には2音節が必要だからです。要するに、単音節の訓読み名詞は「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)として機能しており、そうして「ウルチマ」は存在しません。

Lesson 1 Concept 3: 1-Syllable Particles Are Always Unaccented

Particles are always unaccented. However, this applies to single syllable particles, such as は, が, に, を. Multiple syllable particles are covered in Lesson 8.

助詞は常にアクセントのない状態です。ただし、この規則は「は、が、に、を」などの単音節助詞に当てはまります。複数の音節を含む助詞については、レッスン8で取り上げます。

Applying this concept is very helpful for addressing the single syllable kun nouns presented in Point 1 above. The presence of the unaccented particle after the kun noun provides a relative base for comparison. With the single syllable kun noun and its following particle in a sentence, the listener can easily tell that the noun is accented.

この概念を適用することは、上記のPoint1で提示した単音節の訓読み名詞を扱う上で非常に役立ちます。単音節の訓読み名詞の後に無アクセントの助詞が存在することで、比較のための相対的な基準が提供されることになります。文中に単音節の訓読み名詞とそれに続く助詞がある場合、聞き手は名詞にアクセントがあることを容易に理解できます。

Example Sentence

あつつづいています。 The hot days are continuing.
📱

めてください。 Please close the door.
🏠

Lesson 1 Point 2: 2-Syllable Kun Nouns

It is very easy to identify the accent for a 2-syllable kun noun because it fits exactly with the ideal pattern of accented penult and unaccented ultima.

そうして、2音節の訓名詞のアクセントを識別するのは非常に簡単です。なぜなら、アクセントのある「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)とアクセントのない「ウルチマ」(最後音節)という理想的なパターンに完全に合致するからです。

shoe

salt

smile

As mentioned above, a trailing particle is always unaccented.

前述のとおり、末尾の助詞は常に無アクセントです。

この部屋へやダメです。 Shoes are unacceptable in this room.
🏠

わたしてください。 Please pass the salt.
🏠

あなたのひゃく製品せいひんるでしょう。 Your smile will sell a hundred of our products.

Lesson 1 Point 3: 3-Syllable Kun Nouns

The 3-syllable kun noun is our first opportunity to see when the accent is not on the first syllable of a word. The standard pattern is penult accented and ultima unaccented, and these appear later in the word.

3音節の訓名詞は、単語の最初の音節にアクセントがない場合を初めて確認できる機会です。標準的なパターンは、「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)にアクセントがあり、「ウルチマ」(最後の音節)にはアクセントがなく、これらは単語の最初の音節の後ろに現れます。

This means the first syllable is not accented.

その結果、最初の音節にはアクセントがないことを意味します。

Lesson 1 Concept 4: Sound Units of Words

A sound unit is a collection of syllables that form an integrated building block of a word.

「音節部分」とは、単語を構成する統合された音節集合体であります。(この「音節部分」の言葉は編集者を創造したものです。他人は「形態素」の言葉を使う場合があります。)

In the example at Concept 2, 鳥 is a kun word made up of a single sound unit (とり) but 野鳥 is an on word made up of two sound units (や and ちょう).

Concept2 の例では、「鳥」は 1 つの音節部分 (「とり」) で構成される訓名詞ですが、「野鳥」は 2 つの音節部分 (「や」と「ちょう」) で構成される音語です。

Most kun nouns are formed of a single sound unit, but some comprise more than one sound unit.

ほとんどの訓名詞は単一の音節部分から構成されるが、それでも複数の音節部分から構成されるものもあります。

shoulder
(single sound unit word)

かたこり stiff shoulders
(two sound unit word)
かた

Note: Accent not shown for 肩凝り because an additional concept is covered in a later lesson.

In the above example, 肩凝り has four syllables, か, た, こ, り, but rather than a single sound unit "かたこり" is formed by the two sound units "かた" and "こり".

上の例では、「肩凝り」は「か、た、こ、り」の4音節ですが、「かたこり」は、単一の音単位ではなく、「かた」と「こり」という2つの音節部分で構成されています。

Most kun nouns are formed by a single sound unit, and this makes it easy to identify the accented syllable, since the accent will be on the penult.

ほとんどの訓名詞は単一の音節部分で構成されており、アクセントのある音節を容易に識別でき、アクセントは「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)にあるからです。

Lesson 1 Point 4: 4-Syllable Kun Nouns

Kun nouns with four or more syllables follow the same pattern as 3-syllable kun nouns: all syllables forward of the penult are unaccented.

4つの音節以上の訓名詞は、3音節の訓名詞と同じパターンに従います。「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)より前の音節は、全て、アクセントのない状態です。

The accent is on the penult, and there is a drop to the ultima.

アクセントは「ペヌルト」(最後から2番目の音節)にあり、「ウルチマ」(最後の音節)に向かって音量が下がります。
